AcademicTorrents Torrent Site Serves as a Free Library for Researchers

Joseph Cohen and Henry Lo, the researchers from University of Massachusetts have launched a new torrent site that serves as a free library for academics to share papers and datasets. The site will provide a much reliable and de-centralized platform that students will be able to use to share their work with peers and rest of the world.

According to a note by the site’s founder, this whole new infrastructure will provide open access journals at low cost. By allowing easy and free transfer of files within the student community, the researchers hope to fulfill the mission to create world class research. The papers indexed on the site will be review by peer and distributed throughout the university.

Sharing is one of the primary pillars of academic research. When you allow other researchers to know what you are doing, it creates a more competitive environment. It encourages criticism of ideas, which can be further improved and extended. However, it is always not that easy for academics to share their research papers and journals. The new torrent site called AcademicTorrents hopes to bring about a revolution and change that concept.

This brand new torrent site was launched by Henry Lo and Joseph Cohen. When asked about what motivated them to create such a site they said that sharing has always been difficult. Emails usually come with size limits and setting up a complete server is not that easy as it involves a lot of work.

Hence, the researchers at the University of Massachusetts in Boston have designed a torrent site which aims at providing an easy platform for sharing. According to Cohen, this will provide a secure and scalable repository for data. Furthermore, the website will allow good download speed.

Researchers will be able to use AcademicTorrents to upload a variety of content such as articles, datasets and other types of research materials. The site will have its own tracker and it will support web-seeds that will ensure that the files are available.

One of the main objectives of the project is to give the benefit of research back to the researchers. Instead of keeping the hard work locked and confined behind the paywalls.

The top publications are currently being monetized by the publishers, however AcademicTorrents will change that as it allows free distribution of journals. AcademicTorrents is not only open to the academics but to anyone who wants to join and start sharing
